Alfalfa pellets are gray-green in color and differ in length and width depending on the pellets manufacturers. Alfalfa is a dried green feed that contains valuable vitamins and minerals as well as protein. The dried green alfalfa pellets should not contain a majority of plant parts with high raw fiber content such as stems and straw, as their high raw fiber content reduces digestibility. Before they are harvested, alfalfas have higher nutritional value characterized by higher protein content.

After adding a suitable binder to alfalfa, the composition is processed under high pressure in pellet mills to form cylindrical pellets. Working principle of alfalfa pellet making machine

The basic working principle of the alfalfa pellet machine is to compress the crushed alfalfa raw materials into high-density pellets through mechanical pressure. This equipment usually includes a feeding system, a compression system, a molding system and a discharging system.

The feeding system is responsible for feeding the raw materials into the machine evenly; the compression system compresses the raw materials through high pressure; the molding system cuts the compressed raw materials into uniform pellets; finally, the discharging system discharges the finished pellets.

The alfalfa pellet making machine is only used in the granulation section of the alfalfa pellet production line. To complete the alfalfa granulation, many processes are required to form a complete system, and this system is alfalfa pellet plant.

The method of using mechanical pelleting technology to press hay into finished pellets is called the alfalfa pellet making process. Generally speaking, the standard alfalfa pellet production process flow is: raw material processing → crushing → drying → mixing & batching → pelleting → cooling → screening → packaging.

cleaning section

Generally speaking, alfalfa raw materials need to be cleaned. Impurities such as nails, stones, cigarette butts, metal pieces, etc. in alfalfa seeds are removed through drum screens, permanent magnetic drums, iron removers and other equipment.

crushing section

If your feedstock is not alfalfa meal, then your feedstock needs to be ground (in bales or long sizes). The larger the feedstock size, the more grinding equipment is required. If multiple raw materials are used, the crushing process needs to be customized first.

Drying section

If your raw material has high moisture content, it needs to be dried and must meet the feeding requirements of the alfalfa pellet machine to obtain high-quality alfalfa pellets. Usually, drum dryers and belt dryers are available, and the heat source is optional.

mixing section

When your raw materials include not only alfalfa but also grains, other grasses, agricultural products or other organic materials, in order to ensure the uniformity of pellet quality, you need to add a mixer or even a batching system to the process.

pelleting section

The prepared material is sent to the alfalfa pellet making machine through the conveyor for granulation. The pelleting process is the process of compressing materials into granules for easier storage and transportation. This link is a key step in the entire process and requires precise control of the size and quality of the alfalfa pellets.

cooling section

After the granulation is completed, we use a conveyor belt to send the high-temperature granules into the cooling machine for cooling treatment. This step is to quickly cool down the high-temperature particles and prevent them from sticking together. It also helps to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the alfalfa pellets.

packaging section

After cooling, qualified and unqualified particles will be screened out through vibration, and qualified particles will be packaged into different packaging specifications. Packaging is optional, and some customers choose to ship in bulk. Some customers also use the pellets on their own farms.

Auxiliary section

In addition to the above main sections, in the actual alfalfa pellet processing process, many auxiliary sections need to be set up. Some of these processes are necessary and some are optional: conveying system, storage system, dust removal system, boiler system, grease adding system, fully automatic control system, etc.

0.5-0.6 T/H ruminant alfalfa pellet machine line design

This design comes from one of our Uzbekistan projects. The customer uses alfalfa and a variety of grains and additives as the main raw materials. The proportion of alfalfa is 70-80%, and the moisture content is 40-50%. The alfalfa used in this project is freshly harvested and in bulk.

0.5-0.6 ton ruminant alfalfa pellet line design

The process of this flow chart is described as follows:

  1. First, the alfalfa is crushed by an alfalfa crusher. The grain used by the customer in this project is crushed powder, so there is no need to configure a grain crusher.
  2. The crushed alfalfa is sent to the alfalfa dryer and piled in one place after drying.
  3. Through manual weighing, the dried alfalfa and grains are sent to the mixer in batches according to the ratio, and the alfalfa powder and grains are mixed evenly.
  4. The mixed materials are sent to the alfalfa pellet machine and processed into alfalfa pellets.
  5. The prepared pellets are sent to the cooler, vibrating screen and packaging scale respectively, and finally packaged into 20 kg and 25 kg specifications.

The finished alfalfa pellets of this project will be sold to surrounding cattle and sheep farms. The investment cost of this project is relatively low, and the non-continuous disconnection solution is adopted, which can save some transportation equipment costs. And this solution uses horizontal equipment, which is suitable for situations where the height of the factory building is limited.

5-6T/H Alfalfa Pelletizing Machine Plant Design

This design comes from one of our United States projects. The customer uses 60% alfalfa and straw and 40% grain as the main raw materials, and the pellet formula contains additives such as premixes. The moisture content of the hay and dry straw used by the customer in this project is below 20%. And the grain is also weighed.

1-2T/H alfalfa pellet machine line design

The process of this flow chart is described as follows:

  1. First, a pulverizer is used to crush the alfalfa and straw. Then the crushed materials are sent to a 2.5m³ buffer bin through the cyclone wind transport system.
  2. According to the formula and ratio, the powdered alfalfa straw powder is sent to the mixer in batches, and the grain and premix are fed through the manual feeding port. Then the materials in the mixer are mixed evenly.
  3. The mixed materials are sent to the alfalfa pellet machine and processed into alfalfa pellets.
  4. The prepared pellets are sent to the cooler, vibrating screen and baling scale respectively, and finally packaged into 10 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg specifications.

The finished alfalfa pellets of this project are also sold to surrounding ruminant farms. This project uses bucket elevators as the main conveying equipment, and in terms of civil engineering, pits are dug to lower the height of the production line on the ground.

2-3T/H Fresh Alfalfa Pellet Machine Plant Design

This design comes from one of our Argentina cattle feed processing projects. The customer uses 100% alfalfa and straw as the main raw materials. The moisture content of the hay and dry straw used in this project is as high as 50% or more.

2-3tph fresh alfalfa Pellet machine Plant design

The process of this flow chart is described as follows:

  1. The longer straw and alfalfa are crushed by the hay chopper and then piled in one place;
  2. The crushed materials are sent to the drying drum for drying, and the moisture content will reach 20%;
  3. The dried materials will be sent to the forage crusher for fine crushing, and then sent to the storage bin through the wind conveying system. The storage bin will play a "homogenizing" role and will further reduce the moisture content of the material to about 15-18%;
  4. The stored materials will be sent to the alfalfa pellet machine in batches to obtain finished pellets;
  5. The prepared pellets will be sent to the cooler cold zone for cooling, and then sent to the vibrating screen for screening;
  6. The final qualified alfalfa straw pellets will be packaged into different specifications for sale.

According to customer feedback from this project, the project has earned back the original production line investment cost after one year of production. Because in the Argentine market, as a traditional cattle-raising country, the market prospects of alfalfa pellets are very good.

10T/H Ruminant Alfalfa Pellet Machine Line Design

This project comes from our Tunisian ruminant dairy feed processing project. In this project, the customer uses 70-90% fresh alfalfa as the main raw material, and the remaining 10-30% raw materials are grains. Due to the large output of this project, two crushing systems, two drying systems, two mixing systems and three pelleting systems are used.

10tph Ruminant alfalfa pellet machine Line design

The process of this flow chart is described as follows:

  1. First, the alfalfa is crushed by the alfalfa crusher. The grain used in this project is weighed and will enter directly from the mixing section.
  2. The crushed high-moisture alfalfa will be sent to the dryer for drying;
  3. The dried materials are piled on the spot and then sent to the forage crusher in batches for re-crushing;
  4. The crushed alfalfa is in the form of alfalfa powder, and the wind conveying system will be used to send the materials to the mixing bin. These materials will be sent to the mixer according to the proportion with the weighed grain raw materials.
  5. The mixed materials will be sent to the alfalfa pelletizer for pelleting.
  6. After pelleting, it still goes through cooling, screening and packaging processes to obtain packaged finished alfalfa pellets.

The customer of this project is a local feed company in Tunisia. In order to expand its business, it invested in this ruminant feed processing project in addition to complete compound feed. The project was signed in August 2024, and the final transaction price of the full set of equipment was about US$500,000.

6-20T/H Alfalfa Pellet Line Design

This is a 6-20T/H Alfalfa & Grain Pellet Production Line, a 12-16T/H Formula 50% Crop + 50% Grain Pellet Production Line, or a 6T/H 100% Alfalfa Pellet Production Line. This solution is for a livestock feed processing project in Ghana. In this project, the customer has many types of products to process, and the raw material ratios are different. According to different ratios, the content of alfalfa is different, so the output of this project has flexible room for change.

The process of this flow chart is described as follows:

  1. The grass raw materials such as alfalfa are sent to the forage crusher for crushing;
  2. The crushed materials are sent to the alfalfa dryer for drying to obtain materials with a moisture content of less than 20%, and then the dried materials are stacked in one place through the conveyor;
  3. This is a disconnection design. Next, the grains are fed into the feed grinder manually to obtain powdered materials.
